Growing Valley Oak by Tracy Hobbs and Truman

چکیده

Catifornia species. T propagation and establishment of woody seedlings are important aspects of many forest ecosystem restoration efforts. Two factors that play iraportant roles in successfully growing woody plants are the size and overall quality of the seed and whether or not the seedlings are grown in containers. In this paper, we examine how container size, acorn size and shell integrity, and weevil infestation affect the germination, survivorship, and growth of valley oak (Quercus lobata) seedlings. The issues we raise here are serious concerns for anyone restoring upland habitats in the western United States. Prior to disturbance, many of these ecosystems were populated by several taprooted oak species, including valley oak. These species often have not replaced themselves naturally and are difficult to restore by planting, either as seeds or container-grown seedlings (Muick and Bartolome, 1987; Adams and others, 1992; Swiecki and others, 1997). Knowing whether to be concerned about the effects of containers on tap-rooted oak seedlings and the effects of acorn size and weevil infestations of acorns on germination are, therefore, important pieces of information for restorationists working in these locales.

Effects of Prescribed Fires on Young Valley Oak Trees at a Research Restoration Site in the Central Valley of California

Woodland restoration sites planted with Quercus lobata (valley oak) often have serious invasions of nonnative annual grasses and thistles. Although prescribed fire can effectively control these exotics, restoration managers may be reluctant to use fire if it causes substantial mortality of recently planted saplings. We studied the effects of prescribed fires on the survival and subsequent growt...

California Oaks and Fire: A Review and Case Study

California has a fire-prone Mediterranean climate, and many of its nine species of native oak trees are thought to have evolved with fire. Little has been widely published about the role of fire in the oak recruitment and mortality in the western United States, and there has been some debate about how to reintroduce fire into oak woodlands. We present here a review, synthesis, and analysis of t...

Topographic position modulates the mycorrhizal response of oak trees to interannual rainfall variability.

California coast live oak (Quercus agrifolia) forms tripartite symbiotic associations with arbuscular (AMF) and ectomycorrhizal (EMF) fungi. We selected oak individuals differing in topographic position and depth to groundwater (mesic valley vs. xeric hill sites) to investigate changes of tree mycorrhizal status in response to interannual rainfall variability. EMF root colonization, as well as ...

Effect of Altitude and Growing Season on Some Physiological Properties of Leaf from Persian Oak (Quercus brantii) in Zagros Forest (Case study: Ilam)

Abstract Understanding in variation in tree leaf related to altitude and climate change define the plant adaptation. These variations will predict their respond to the future changes. According to the vast distribution of Persian oak (Quercus brantii) trees in Zagros forest, the study of structural changes and the recognition the Persian oak ecological needs is crucial for their conservation a...

Plant species in Oak (Quercus brantii Lindl.) understory and their relationship with physical and chemical properties of soil in different altitude classes in the Arghvan valley protected area, Iran

The present survey was carried out in Oak (Quercus brantii Lindl.) woodlands of Arghvan valley protected area, in Ilam province, western Iran. The main aim of this study was to survey the understory vegetation of oak in different classes of altitude (1400-1600, 1600-1800 and >1800 m) in the southern aspects, and their relationship with physical and chemical properties of soil. Four transects, w...
